The Big Question: Agency vs Client Side (Infographic)
So, who is the winner?
Everyone has their opinion on which one is better but the truth is that they are two completely different jobs suited to different personalities and lifestyles. So what are these differences?
Brand Portfolio
When working in an agency you will be exposed to many different brands, gaining lots of experience and exposure, whereas when working client side you will work on one sole brand and that brand will be your whole (work) life.
Work Environment
Looking for a fun office, possibly with a bar and bean bags? Agency is where you need to be. Not that client-side can’t be fun, but it tends to be more of a corporate environment, suits rather than sneakers. Agencies also tend to be comprised of a lot of younger employees whereas client side is usually populated with older, more experienced professionals.
Job Description
In an agency you will have a very narrowly classified job title such as PPC executive, brand manager, brand strategist or account manager. The roles are clearly defined and fulfill a specific function within a team. When working client-side you will be expected to have a wider range of abilities, you will have a title such as Marketing Manager and will be in charge of overseeing agency outputs.
Time
Do you value your time outside of work? If yes, then client side is the way forward. Client work tends to be a structured 8-5 with a predictable workload whereas at an agency you will be expected to work overtime, work hard and work fast.
Money
So where is the money at? Client side. Agencies offer lower starting salaries but more opportunity to learn and grow. Client side generally pays higher salaries and includes benefits not included at agencies.
The general consensus is that agencies are for younger employees looking to learn as much as possible and grow their careers. Whereas client side could be better suited to a more mature and experienced employee looking for stability.
